Softball

Running to first base
My youngest daughter, Sarah, is playing on the Varsity Softball team in Santa Clara High School. She has been playing softball since she was six years old. When she first started playing I ... sort of ... wasn't allowed to go to her games. The first time I was able to go to her games was when she was 8. At that time she played pitcher and catcher. When she was 10 she started playing outfield and then changed to first base. She spent two years playing on the JV team in high school and now she plays first base on Varsity, but she is a Junior and the other girl playing first base is a Senior so she doesn't get more than 50% playing time. I enjoy watching Sarah play, she is very dedicated and gives all her effort when she is playing.
Trying to pick them off at first
All of my daughters played softball when they were young. When we came back from Korea Lindsey was in sixth grade and never played before. She had never even thrown a baseball in her life. I can remember her first time trying to play catch. I really felt sad and realized I had let my kids down by having them live overseas so long. Lindsey was on a very good team and contributed to it. She usually played right field and I cringed every time the ball was hit in that direction. Her batting got pretty good. I attended everyone of her games when she played for PAL and she played her Freshman year in high school, but I never saw a game. I was hoping she would continue when she went to college and play intramural, but she didn't.
Runner beat the tag!
Jayne stated when she was in Fourth Grade and kept improving. I remember when she was playing on Saturday on a PAL team and she hurt her ankle and I ran onto the field and carried her off the field. I always try to protect my kids, even when they play a sport, and felt bad because she got hurt. Jayne didn't continue playing after she went into high school. I was always happy that she played PAL because she at least knew the game and it helped round out her education. I don't know if she ever plays for fun, but at least she can. I am very proud that she played and I hope she is proud of it too.
